Truth Be Told

Truth. Something I fight with my son to tell. Something we are taught to tell at all times. The Bible even tells us the truth sets us free. The world would be a better place if people just told the truth. Do you know that means telling the truth in all things……….even about ourselves? When someone asks how you are doing, how quickly do you respond with “I’m fine” or “I’m good”? I know those phrases roll off my tongue very easily. In my head I’m screaming that I’m drowning……..but most don’t want that answer. They want the answer of we are fine…….then they don’t have to be invested. And I don’t want to burden, so it’s easier to answer that I’m fine. When the truth is, I’m broke….Im broken and my life most of the time feels out of control. But we have become a society so disassociated from real truth that no one wants to talk about what is really going on with someone. I’m gonna hit a nerve, I know……but even in the church…….especially in the church. We want to put on a picture perfect scene of picture perfect members that come each week in their Sunday best and look pretty in a pew. What happened to the church being a hospital for the sick and hurting? An open door for someone that may not look like us, but definitely needs us…..needs the Hope from a Living and Loving God. Truth be told its just easier to look the other way, to not get involved, to keep a fake smile and go about our day. But if we are honest……how many of us are broken and drowning and praying for a hand to pull us up? Truth be told, God’s hand is there, we just have to take it….stop lying and be honest and grab hold of Him and the saving grace He has for us.

Matthew West has a song by this same title, Truth Be Told. Listen to it. The lyrics speak hard truths, but truths none the less. He says “I don’t know why it’s so hard to admit it when being honest is the only way to fix it” So truth be told, I’m not fine…….and I know many of you can say the same thing. So step one, just be honest and let the truth be told. Next step, lean on God and His promises. He will send trusted people in your life to help you through. He has sent me a couple awesome ones that pull me out of myself when I’m drowning. So let’s learn to be honest. And church, listen. Listen to those in your community. See the need, the honest need….and meet it. Stop being afraid of not being picture perfect and just start loving as He taught us. Truth be Told.
