Maundy Thursday

Good Morning and happy Thursday! I haven’t really highlighted on it being Holy Week this week, leading up to Easter Sunday……. But today I want to talk about this Holy Day. Maundy Thursday.

Today is the day in the Bible where Christ had what we like to call, the last supper with His disciples…….. it’s also the night He gave a new commandment……. The commandment to Love one another just as He has loved us.

This time of year we look to the Cross and the Resurrection, which of coarse are super important……. Without either we have no salvation. But I think this day is just as important. Christ sets the example of love and servant hood, a model for how He wants us to live our lives. We see Jesus, our Savior and King, kneel down in front of his disciples and one by one wash their feet. Now stop and think on this. They lived in a very dusty part of the world and if they had any shoes, they were sandals. So it was customary to have a basin of water to wash feet with when someone entered your home. A persons feet would be very dirty, calloused, maybe even cuts and scrapes……so being able to have them washed was a needed but dirty task. This task was generally done by a servant or a woman……..never the head of the household…….and most definitely not a King. But here Jesus shocks his disciples by doing this to them, to the point Peter questions Him and even says never will You was my feet. Jesus told him in John 13:8 “If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.” WOW The King of Kings says basically unless we allow Him to wash us………..spiritually clean us…………we have NO place with Him. This is also Him setting an example of servitude He wants us to follow. How else do we show the love of Christ other than to live as He lived and treat others as He treated us.

Ok I’m rambling………I do that haha. Go further into chapter 13 of John, verses 34-35……here Christ gives us His new commandment; “that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have loved for one another.” Again………the gospel is so simple! LOVE….He wants us to just simply love people. That is not Him saying we approve every choice a person makes, but just as with my kids, they may do things I don’t approve of but I still love them……and sometimes loving them means correcting them and showing them what it right. Christ wants us to love……I mean He loved us in all our wickedness.

Ok, jump back a couple books to Matthew 26:26-28. Here we go……..the last supper……we also call it the Lords Supper. This is so important in our Christian faith…….to partake in this as a body of believers. Jump to 1 Corinthians and Paul gives his own account of we as a body of believers doing this. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. Jesus instructs that the bread represents His body and the wine represents the His blood of the covenant that is being poured out for the forgiveness of sins. When we as believers partake in this very humbling act, we proclaim Christs death and what He did for us until He returns again. But the amazing thing that sets Christ apart from other religions gods is the fact that He died but he didn’t stay dead……but this is Thursday haha…..Sunday is coming.

If you hung around this long I thank you. There is so much more to dive into concerning this Holy day, but I hope you go and study and research it more yourself. This day, in my opinion is just as important as the crucifixion and the resurrection because Christ gives us the blue prints basically on how to live. How we are to act as the body of Christ and how we are to love.

But before I end this……one of the most important parts of this day. This is also the night Christ was betrayed by one of His own…….Judas. One key point here, when Christ was arrested……His disciples quickly and quietly FLED…….leaving Him. Peter quietly followed behind but not once, not twice, but three times cursed and denied ever knowing Christ. How many times has this been us….fleeing when times get hard…….denying Christ………..maybe not with words but with actions……….too many for me. This night is a sombering night. So today……….as you go about your day……take a moment to be just silent and be present in Christ. Don’t say a word……..allow Him to speak to you. Remember…….all this happened to fulfill scripture and to give us salvation. ❤️
