Today is April 1st, and regarded as a day of pranks and Tom foolery, known as April Fools day. Can’t say I didn’t play a prank myself today that caused some to foolishly fall for it, was it right….maybe not…but it was all in fun and we all laughed. But my devotion today was all about actually being a fool.
Before you say, Sara…what are you talking about…I’m no fool and have no desire to be a fool….just hang tight and keep reading. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 3:18 “take care that no one deceives himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise.” Hmmm we must become foolish to become wise?? What does Paul mean? Well my daddy always says you have to read the context to the verse to know what is meant…meaning what was being said leading up to the verse and what was said after…that way you get a clearer picture. If you continue reading Paul tells us that the wisdom of the world is foolishness in the sight of God and that the Lord calls the thoughts of the “wise” to be useless. What he is saying, is that to basically be wise in Christ, we will look foolish to the world, so that we can not be boastful or prideful…all glory can only be pointed to Christ. If you skip over to chapter 9 of 1 Corinthians verse 16; Paul tells us that if he preaches the gospel he can not boast because he is so compelled to preach. Keep reading and he states doing so voluntarily there will be a reward, but if he preaches against his own selfish desire he is still preaching none the less….he can’t help it…..which in sense makes him seem foolish in the eyes of the world. By doing so…he gives glory to God and not himself.
David Crowder sings a song called undignified…. It says “I will dance, I will sing, to be mad for my King…NOTHING Lord is hindering the passion in my soul….And I’ll become even more undignified than this, some would say its foolishness” Becoming undignified for our King because our soul just can not contain the passion. I believe this is what Paul meant. Look at king David…he would dance without care before our God because he loved Him so much!
But I think another reason we are told to become fools, is because many times those that are wise by worldly standards can not grasp and comprehend God and His word…they overcomplicate what they can’t understand….even though as I said yesterday…its so simple. So to be a fool in the eyes of the world we grasp the knowledge and wisdom laid before us in the Bible. It all comes full circle…we are not of this world and should not be conformed to it. So we become foolish for Christ, because we are in this world not of it….just passing through.
Y’all go out today and act a little “foolish” for Christ today….i guarantee it will lighten your heart and put a smile on your face! And if you ever have doubts…remember His love never fails, never gives up, and never runs out….yes….I lean alot on songs haha.
